The City of Coral Gables is actively addressing the structural and historical integrity of City Hall. Historic Resources staff is working alongside the City Manager’s Office, Public Works, and renown structural engineering firm, Wood, O’Donnell Narcato (WON), ensuring a focused and effective response to both immediate concerns and a long-term restoration plan. The city’s Preservation Officer is engaged in reviewing and providing assessments of the temporary repairs, ensuring every phase of the project, from assessment through construction, maintains the highest standards of care and precision.
We have selected RJ Heisenbottle Architects, PA to conduct a comprehensive assessment of City Hall, encompassing evaluations of existing conditions, architectural and engineering design services, and construction documentation. Evergreene Architectural Arts is also involved as the Conservator in this crucial project. Our collaboration with these experts underscores our commitment to a historically sensitive restoration process.
Thanks to the proactive measures taken, including extensive shoring work currently in place, the building remains safe and stable. This safety measure, affirmed by Douglas Wood, PE of WON during a recent Commission Meeting, ensures that City Hall will continue to serve its historical and civic function securely as we move forward with the planned restoration.
As we proceed, more detailed updates about contracts, dates, and timelines will be shared, reflecting our transparency and ongoing commitment to keeping the community informed. We appreciate the community's patience as we continue to preserve this iconic building for future generations.
