The City Commission received an update at the May 30th City Commission meeting regarding the process for annexing Little Gables, High Pines and Ponce-Davis into the City of Coral Gables to the City of Coral Gables.
The City is working with the applicable County Commission offices to assess the level of neighborhood support for annexation into the City of Coral Gables. With respect to Little Gables, City staff has been working closely with Miami-Dade Commissioner Rebeca Sosa’s Office, and two community meetings have taken place regarding annexation. The City prepared a joint County/City fact sheet that was mailed to Little Gables residents that provided a comparison of costs and services between Coral Gables and unincorporated Miami-Dade. The County Commissioner’s Office also sent a survey to Little Gables residents and received 68% of support for annexation from the survey respondents. The next step for Little Gables is to obtain voter petitions from 20% of registered voters in the area, a Miami Dade County prerequisite.
Regarding High Pines and Ponce-Davis, City staff has been coordinating with Miami-Dade County Commissioner Xavier Suarez and his staff as well as interested residents. A City hosted community meeting for High Pines and Ponce-Davis took place on June 6th and the next step is to mail surveys to registered voters after Labor Day. The City administration will not recommend that the City Commission move forward with the annexation process unless there is a strong mandate (considered a super majority or 66%) by the neighborhood surveyed. It is possible that areas within Ponce-Davis and High Pines are considered separately if one area has a strong mandate while the other does not.
In the event the County Commission approves the City’s annexation request, a separate referendum of registered voters in the High Pines, Ponce-Davis and Little Gables annexation areas will be held. If a majority vote of 50% + 1 is achieved in these areas, they will officially be annexed into the City of Coral Gables as of the following fiscal year.
